Soy Wax - What is it?

Soy Wax - What is it?

Soy Bean Field

Soy wax is the best natural wax to make candles with. Soy wax is made from the oil of soybeans.

To make the soy wax first the oil has to be extracted from the soybeans. The process starts with the cleaning of the soybeans. Then the soybeans are cracked to remove the hulls. Once the soybeans have been cleaned and de-hulled the soybeans are rolled into flakes.

The oil is extracted from the soy flakes and the soy oil then will go onto the hydrogenation process. The hydrogenation process turns the liquid soy oil into a solid form.

For soy wax the soy oil is only partially hydrogenated. So depending on how much the soy oil has been hydrogenated will determine the melt point of the soy wax.

For pillar and votive candles you want the soy wax to have a higher melt point because these type of candles generally burn free standing meaning they are not container candles.

  • It's not recommended to burn votive candles in anything other than a votive candle container for your safety.

The hydrogenated soy oil goes through a cooling process and a flaker which makes the soy wax easy to handle.

With what is left over after the oil has been extracted from the soy meal flakes can go to animal feed. In our area it goes to the local hog farmers.

  • The top soybean producing states are: Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota, Indiana and Ohio.

Use of soy wax

Soy wax can be used in a number of ways for candle making projects. The most popular way is in container candles and this is the easiest way too.

Many people like to use unblended soy wax like Golden Brands soy wax 415 with or without color and one of our fragrance oils to produce a container candles. Most soy waxes people use today are blended with other natural oils to produce a candle with better fragrance retention, cold and hot scent throw and or improved appearance, like NatureWax C-3, Golden Brands soy wax 444 and Golden Brands soy wax 464.

Whether the soy wax is a blend or not you can mix soy waxes with other natural waxes like beeswax and also with paraffin waxes with great success. For pillars, votive candles and scent tarts you can use Ecosoya PB blend.
